What is Food Tourism?

Food tourism, also known as gastrotourism, is traveling to a destination to get to know the area based on the local cuisine. Just like how an oyster might have merroir from the salty sea water where it was formed, a community can offer an essence of flavor identity. From the deliciously crusty, thin slices of New York pizza to the fresh street taco infusions of Los Angeles, adventurous travelers are purposefully seeking out nearby and far-flung local restaurants to relish a destination’s sense of taste. According to Food & Wine, food tourism has significantly increased in recent years. “Travelers are eager to explore a destination through its restaurants, farms, and traditional ingredients and dishes in an ever-growing list of ways.”

At Feast, we’ve also seen and experienced this at our restaurant. We’re delighted when guests travel to our bistro because they want to taste the creative and inventive Montana dishes we serve. At Feast, our approach to the flavorful dishes we serve begins with the remarkable purveyors and suppliers we partner with to source our ingredients. From local farms to sustainable fisheries, these purveyors build the foundation of our dishes by supplying us with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients available, such as organic leafy greens, shoots, blossoms, vegetables, herbs, and more. From there, our culinary staff works their unique, gastronomic magic. Instead of covering up or burying dishes with too many flavors, they enhance each dish’s flavor while never losing the delicious “heart” of it.

Our locally sourced ingredients do not simply convey a sense of taste and place about Montana; we also believe these products make our meals extraordinary and our guests’ dining experiences unique.
